Microwave Ovens and Plastics

The use of plastic wrap and plastic containers is part of microwave cooking and has been for many years. We have all tried to stop the inside of our microwaves looking like a swarm of flies have been swatted in it by using many different methods from putting plates over bowls to using plastic wrap over our food. The only problem with plastic wrap is the chemical compounds that it is made from, which when heated can be released. This “migration” of chemicals can happen if the plastic wrap is in contact with the food when it is cooked in a microwave oven and may cause illness. There is though scant evidence to substantiate this.

These chemical compounds though have been also found in food packaging including margarine tubs. Margarine containers an melt not only releasing these chemicals, but this can also taint the food. The food agencies on both sides of the atlantic admit that chemicals from the plastics can migrate, but say that there is no significant risk to anybody. The consumer groups and environmental groups though are stating the complete opposite, so the debate is on. This debate will probably rumble for many years. If you are worried the best advice really is to remove the products from any packaging and cook using cookware that is labeled microwave safe.

There are many other products available, which are specifically designed for use in microwave ovens, including microwave safe covers and splatter screens, which will protect you, your families and your microwave ovens. Bought to you by Rossgo of http://www.everythingmicrowaves.com
